Teen Intervention Help: Do you think — or know — that your child is using drugs or alcohol?

Even if you believe your teen is just “experimenting” it’s important to take action right away.

Casual drug use can quickly turn into drug abuse, dependence or addiction and can lead to accidents, legal trouble and serious health issues.

If you are at all concerned about your child – or even just have a bad feeling – you can and should intervene by:

  • Setting tighter limits with clear consequences
  • Getting outside help and support if necessary
  • Having productive conversations with your child — remain calm, share your concerns and listen.
  • Closely monitoring your child’s behavior and activities

A lack of effective medications to treat cocaine addiction means that the current best hope for recovery is behavioral therapy, in which people learn to ignore the cues that trigger their drug craving and to establish new habits that provide healthy rewards. New research by Dr. Michael A. Nader, Dr. Robert W. Gould, and colleagues at Wake Forest School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, suggests that the brain’s capacity for this type of learning is compromised during the initial days and weeks of cocaine abstinence, but may return to normal thereafter.

I just celebrated 2 years Nicotine and Tobacco free on January 16, 2013

While sobriety remains the most important aspect of my life “we are not a glum lot “

In May 2011, I quit my job, sold my car and said farewell to a host of friends and family and took a flight from Los Angeles, California to Paris, France.

I am officially here to learn French, but that is but a side benefit to sharing a new life experience my significant other, who happens to be French!

RECOVERY IS INTERNATIONAL.  The “City of Lights” has a huge English Speaking Recovery Community that has embraced and welcomed me.

THANK YOU ….. PASADENA RECOVERY CENTER and A POWER GREATER THAN MYSELF THAT BLESSED THE BROKEN ROAD THE LED ME STRAIGHT TO YOU

Although less common, substance abuse is also a key concern. While the 2008 Department of Defense Health Behavior Survey reveals general reductions over time in tobacco use and illicit drug use, it reported increases in other areas, such as prescription drug abuse and heavy alcohol use. In fact, prescription drug abuse doubled among U.S. military personnel from 2002 to 2005 and almost tripled between 2005 and 2008.

Alcohol abuse is the most prevalent problem and one which poses a significant health risk. A study of Army soldiers screened 3 to 4 months after returning from deployment to Iraq showed that 27 percent met criteria for alcohol abuse and were at increased risk for related harmful behaviors (e.g., drinking and driving, using illicit drugs). And although soldiers frequently report alcohol concerns, few are referred to alcohol treatment. Research findings highlight the need to improve screening and access to care for alcohol-related problems among service members returning from combat deployments.
