Living in a world where we are distracted by the thrill of adventure but shun the very beauty of predictability, how is one to make the “right” decisions all of the time? Addicts have an incredible way of looking for their watered down version of the truth. They become content believing the preposterous images they conjure in their head, convincing themselves that they are rarely wrong. It’s truly amazing how rationalization becomes second nature to even the most aware of us.

The pessimistic reality of it is the disease most people are afraid of the truth. Afraid to accept the grandiosity of their alcoholic thinking. Afraid to imagine a life without substances. Afraid to recognize their longing for respect for truth- and not just from other individuals. Most normal people don’t want to put the time in to figure themselves out in an introspective capacity like recovery requires- so why would addicts? Why would we look for a pride snubbing, confidence dropping dose of reality? We prefer to abuse anything that provides a diluted version of reality. We don’t want to put work into anything really.

Well like it or not, some of our more favorable escapisms show us rather quickly that our alcoholic thinking is not really sustainable. This manner of thinking has only created chaotic wreckage around us. Eventually, it all comes crumbling down and were forced to either pick a new trial or brace for impact. Picking recovery will open the door for options we would never have imagined existed- but they have to be done the right way. There’s no room for distractions when something as serious as life or death is put on the table. This is why picking a gender-specific rehab will give us the upper hand as we reach that hand out for help.

Understanding the Focus

Recovery is about being aware. It’s about properly processing the distractions that enter our lives and dealing with them accordingly. After all, for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction as they say. We usually recognize the distractions, but alcoholic thinking causes us to quickly overlook them. Of those distractions in early recovery, the opposite sex often becomes the ultimate diversion. This isn’t to say that the opposite sex has no value in recovery, but more so that early recovery is more profitable if the focus is entirely on self. This is where gender-specific rehabs come in handy. They help us do something for ourselves that we may or may not have the power to do.

Alcoholic thinking is a disease- plain and simple. Those of us inflicted never lose it; it’s with us for life. Left to our own decisions, we have wound up here- need to understand the importance of a gender-specific rehab as we explore the idea of help. However, it’s also vital to know that the alcohol is only a symptom of our thinking. Just because we shatter the bottle in a moment of clarity doesn’t mean we are cured. The obsessive disease lies in our manner of justification thinking. It is our thinking and doesn’t go away unless we do. So we learn to tame it- for lack of better words. Alcoholics have a tendency to process reality differently through their distorted lenses, thus the reason why it takes a while to embed certain things into our thick skulls. This is just the nature of addicts, we are very stubborn at times.

Leading with Recovery, Not Hormones

Once the advocation for sobriety has been made, then the beginnings of recovery and finding a gender-specific rehab can begin. As recovery begins, the numbness goes away. The mind and body have begun to heal themselves in a way that wakes everything back up. Emotions and hormones come flooding back. Lust and libido end up returning. Love becomes something that is possible again- but it’s all disturbances right now. A gender-specific rehab will help us to avoid thinking between our legs and more so on top of our shoulders.

Aside from those animal instinct distractions, a few of the other reasons to pick a gender-specific rehab include:

  • Men and Women Usually Deal with Dual Diagnosis Differently
  • Men and Women Experience Trauma Differently
  • Men and Women Often Relapse for Different Reasons
  • Most Feel More Understood/Comfortable with the Same Gender

In early recovery, most of us are in a fragile state. Our emotions are temperamental and things can get pretty heavy. Any bit of validation or internal substantiation can derail us from the important matters at hand. Admittance into a gender-specific rehab can keep things much more focused. Picking this gender-specific rehab facility isn’t always what we want, but it’ll be exactly what we need.

Exploring the Planets

While having this time to reflect on relationships is pertinent, there is also the benefit of having somebody of the same sex understand some of the personal matters at hand. Often times in addiction/alcoholism recovery settings, many issues can be particular in regards to the anatomy of the body. Even when it comes to the brain chemistry- there are certain ways each gender thinks that differing thought processes could become a conflict of interest in co-ed groups. Kind of like they’ve always said, men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Either way, having the same gender understand and relate can be that motivating factor that keeps us holding on in early recovery.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to how badly somebody wants to get clean. Despite your sexual preference, of course, it’s not preferable separating the sexes, but if it’s done right the first time, then it never has to be repeated. Finding a gender-specific rehab will help to realize that one size does not fit all.

It can be intimidating to know that addiction never goes away, but being understood helps build that counter confidence. Sometimes getting a little push is all it takes to start a new path.
