What is Addiction?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as, “a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.” They say that addiction is the result of biological, psychological, and environmental factors that cause an individual to experience an overwhelming compulsion to use drugs even though using could result in serious medical consequences or even death.

To those who do not suffer from addiction, the addict’s actions seem insane, due to the fact that they continue to use regardless of the fact that their lives have become completely unmanageable. To the outside observer, it is almost impossible to comprehend what the addict is thinking when they go back out and use again because to them it is so obvious that drugs and alcohol are the problems. Yet to the person afflicted with the addiction this may not be apparent. One of the chief characteristics of addiction, like many addictions in Pasadena, is that the person who suffers from the illness will often time be in complete denial about their problem.

They may believe that if the laws were different, or if people just got off their back that all would be well, completely disregarding the fact that drugs and alcohol are what put them in their current predicament. This denial can be so strong that it can take years for it to break, and often times without first fully coming to terms with their addiction, an addict will be unable to follow a program of recovery that can help save their life.

Breaking free from this denial is never easy, as it takes a concerted effort on the part of the individual afflicted and many times aid and help from an outside source like Pasadena Recovery Center. Part of what our job consists of is to help those suffering from addiction in Pasadena and the rest of the country, come to the realization that they cannot use successfully— that they suffer from an illness that is tremendously powerful and that in order to overcome it, they have to maintain complete abstinence.

Overview of Addictions We Treat

Although addiction expresses itself in similar ways throughout addicted populations, the substance of choice that individuals abuse will alter the way that their treatment needs to go. For instance, people who are addicted to cocaine will suffer from different issues than people who are addicted to opiates. Since these substances are so very different and the effects they produced are so different, the treatment process must be tailor-made to suit the needs of the individual.

The types of addictions we treat include:

  •      Stimulants
  •      Painkillers
  •      Opiates/ Heroin
  •      Benzodiazepine
  •      Cocaine
  •      Ecstasy
  •      Alcohol
  •      Methamphetamine
  •      Adderall
  •      And many more…

Seeking help for your substance abuse issues is never easy and that is why we here at Pasadena Recovery Center attempt to make your transition into a life of recovery as easy and comfortable as possible.
