Fast fast fast. Everything is getting faster. Every day is getting faster. From the cell phones to cars, and from airports to restaurants, it’s all about speed these days. It seems planet earth has gotten itself in quite the hurry. It’s one thing to travel at the speed of light, but what about traveling at the speed of life?

Constantly running around day after day while trying to keep up with the demands of society can wear anybody out. Eventually, thru all the hustle and bustle, we find ourselves facing sleep deprivation, malnutrition, or become generally frustrated at how thin we’ve allowed ourselves to be spread. Always so much to do with so little time. Places to go and people to see. It never ends.

Those of us on the rational side of the street recognize that keeping up with the sands of time requires balance and perseverance. Even the best of us need that time to recharge. Then there are those that want to beat life at its own game. They look for something to speed them up just a little. First, it starts with coffee or energy drinks but eventually requires more. This is where abused stimulants often enter the picture and the still strays far from Kodak. Speed kills and so does it’s good friend addiction.

The Meth Lab

In today’s ever-accelerating world, finding abused stimulants of any classification is as easy as saying the word “speed”. The streets, convenience stores, and medicine cabinets of America are stuffed to the brim with all sorts of uppers. Whenever there is a demand, there will be a supply for it- legal or not. On the hunt for the abused stimulants circulating the U.S., it would not be difficult to come across any of the following:

  • Caffeine Pills
  • Adderall, Ritalin, or other Prescription Stimulants
  • Methamphetamines (Tweak, Ice, Crystal)
  • Amphetamine Sulphate
  • Cocaine or Crack Cocaine

This is the identified lineup for some of the most commonly abused stimulants on the market. Appearing in many different forms, the whole lot of them are an unstoppable entourage or chemical warfare. Whether created in laboratories or bathtubs, the destructive properties are hard to ignore.

Paying Attention

Many begin their career with abused stimulants thru a diagnosis of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. This tends to be a case where somebody has a difficult time focusing, so they’re prescribed controlled doses of speed like Adderall, Concerta, or Ritalin to improve their attention to these focal points. These substances are meant for those that are typically prone to distraction but end up being the abused stimulants of those looking for a little heart racing euphoria.

All too often the innocent prescribing of uppers to some is the manifestation of alcoholic thinking to others. In many cases, a child will start exhibiting traits of ADD or ADHD at a young age, so the parents will try to regulate that attention span by “improving” upon it. A lot of the time the kid will be introduced to these abused stimulants in their youth, thus creating an early onset dependence to something they’re taught makes them normal. Other times, the person may develop a tolerance over years and begin to look for their own illegal methods of attention correction down the road. It’s a darn shame. Much of the addiction that plagues the United States is legally prescribed in an office setting.

Up, Up, and Away

To reiterate, abused stimulants have solidified their place in society because of the need to keep up. Speed helps us get 26 hours of work done on that 24 hour day. It increases all around productivity, raises dopamine levels, and saves money on a food budget. So what’s not to like?

Just like any combination of chemicals, there comes a toll with the perceived solution these abused stimulants provide. With the rising tolerances of these pick-me-ups comes physical and mental obsession. Dependence then picks up the pieces and leaves the person in shambles. Alcoholic thinking aside, the abused stimulants will cause other problems to cope with such as:

  • Skin Disorders
  • Cardiac Issues
  • Breathing Problems
  • Brain Damage
  • Amphetamine Psychosis
  • Seizures and Convulsions

However, those are all part of the package with continued abuse of speedy chemicals. When you look in a magazine and see “The faces of Meth”, it’s not just a scare tactic. This perceived form of propaganda is the real deal.

Slowing It Down for Recovery

Alcoholic thinking can find prevalence in anybody. There are no limitations to who will fall victim to this incredulous disease. Dependency is dependency- period. The same as most junkies and heavy boozers, speed freaks find their happiness thru a drug of choice they have latched onto. They convince themselves of its necessity to function in the scummy pungent bubble of corruption they live in.

The irrational think that without it they are destined for misery. The rational know that with it they are destined for even worse misery. Alcoholic thinking will play mind games like that. It convinces addicts to look at things thru distorted lenses, oblivious to the fact that they would be better off without. This is where recovery comes in. Recovery helps us recognize the potential damage being caused thru abused stimulants or other substances. It helps us realize that there is an easier way of living that doesn’t require heart palpitations for our pursuit of happiness.
