Cameron Douglas Writes from Prison, Demanding Change
Michael Douglas’ son, incarcerated for drug crimes, slams the system for its treatment of addicts.
Michael Douglas’ son Cameron is speaking out from behind bars, calling for treatment rather than jail time for non-violent drug offenders.
Cameron Douglas said to the Huffington Post on Tuesday that United States laws impose tougher penalties on addicts than on violent criminals. The 34-year-old is serving a 9 1/2-year prison sentence after various drug violations.
Douglas, an actor who starred with his famous father and grandfather in 2003′s “It Runs In the Family,” was first convicted in 2010 of selling methamphetamine, and a judge nearly doubled that sentence after he was found guilty of repeatedly breaking prison rules by arranging to get drugs.
“I’m not saying that I didn’t deserve to be punished, or that I’m worthy of special treatment. I made mistakes and I’ll gladly and openly admit my faults,” he wrote. “However, I seem to be trapped in a vicious cycle of relapse and repeat, as most addicts are.”
Douglas is scheduled for release in early 2018.

The final five-episode season — kicking off Thursday, June 13, at 9 p.m. — will feature what the cable network dubs its most “intense” and “gripping” stories yet. During its run,Intervention earned two Emmy nominations for outstanding reality series, taking home the statuette in 2009.
Addiction specialists Jeff Van Vonderen, Candy Finnigan and Donna Chavous will return for the final episodes. Ken Seeley also returns “for one of the most difficult and dramatic episodes in the series’ history.”
“As ‘Intervention’ comes to an end, we’re proud to have paved the way for such an original and groundbreaking series,” David McKillop, executive vice president of programming for A&E Network and BIO Channel, said in a statement. “We’re honored to have been a part of the 243 interventions since its premiere in March of 2005, leading to the 156 individuals that are currently sober to this day.”
