Due to speak at the Pasadena Recovery Center on June 5, actress Mackenzie Phillips spends some time with us to share her thoughts as well as how she copes with alcoholism.
“I am so passionate about recovery and I just think it’s really important to try and get rid of the shame and fear attached to not only being an active addict, but to be an addict in recovery, or an alcoholic for that matter,” says Phillips.
“I think speaking out about it lessens the stigma,” she adds.
As a recovering alcoholic, Phillips tells us how it has affected her way of looking at things.
“I don’t struggle with wanting to drink or use any of those things. I think that in my case, and I think this is true for a lot of people, once you take the substance away you have to learn how to live with an alcoholic mind and it’s not that you’re not left with the drinking problem, you’re going to end up with a thinking problem,” says Phillips.
A thinking problem is always better than a drinking problem, and though it may seem simple, Phillips tells us it’s far from easy.
“A lot of people think that you just stop using or drinking and everything is peachy keen. Really there’s work that has to be done in order to live a sober, recovery-based comfortable life,” says Phillips.
Phillips tells us that “there’s a daily maintenance that has to go down in order to be comfortable in your own skin and I do that on a daily basis and I live a very happy, comfortable life.
When asked how she manages to lead a sober lifestyle, Phillips says it’s “just meditation and prayer, and I have great relationships with friends and family, and I work with animals.” A simple life for sure, but one that helps her be sober and do what she loves.
In her talk on June 5, Phillips will also be promoting her book, High on Arrival.
“It’s a memoir. It’s the story of my life from my perspective up until 2009. The book came out in September of 2009 and did number three on the New York Times list which was kind of awesome. It’s a very honest look at my experiences and my recovery and talks about my life and what happened and what it’s like today,” explains Phillips.
Before leaving, Phillips shares with us on what she feels for Dr. Drew Pinsky and Celebrity Rehab. She says, “I am a strong supporter of Dr. Drew Pinsky and that Celebrity Rehab was an amazing experience and I think it’s something that was such more of a public service to the viewers.”
The show demystified substance abuse treatments, and though Dr. Drew came under fire, a lot of fire, Phillips thinks it’s unfair.
“He’s a good man and he’s an amazing champion for recovery and I have a huge amount of respect for him,” she adds.
